artist?
me? an artist? i suppose so.
i paint. i write. i photograph.... i do many things that are considered 'art'.
but i've always felt like 'artist' is a moniker that applies to people who are less about art and more about the 'art scene'.
i am learning that there are many out there who call themselves artist that really are, though. some of them are still a little bit scenester but they are certainly talented artists. but i just can't bring myself to think of myself in quite those terms.
art, to me, isn't easily defined. it is an organic process that is chaos incarnate. it is an image, a sound, a tactile impression that moves you as you interact with it. you don't have to like it. you can hate it. it's still art. art isn't something you like. it's something you feel. so how do you objectively assess art, or if someone is an artist. what moves me may not move you. if one of my pieces moves you, in your eyes i am an artist. if you are unmoved by my creations, then i am not.
i cannot call myself an artist with impunity. i only know that the things i create move me. they make me question myself and the world around me. therefore....
artist?
the photo above, titled "spirits of the valley", is a moment of desolate beauty. the stark but shrouded depths of the human soul that is beautiful even when grotesque. to others it may simply be a fuzzy picture of some fog and trees. it's up to you to decide if i am an artist in your eyes.
